When you think of Japan, you probably think a couple of things. First, the cities: Tokyo, Kyoto, and Osaka. Next you think of the nature. Maybe the Bamboo Forest, and definitely Cherry Blossoms and Mt. Fuji. What you probably don’t think of is what’s around Mt. Fuji. You might know it’s nestled on the border of Shizuoka and Yamanashi prefectures. If you’ve been there in the summer, you might think of hiking, or motorcycles that tour the winding roads in the rolling hills around Fuji. Would you expect there to be a craft leather studio or an outlet mall in the vicinity? Maybe the outlet mall, but not the craft leather studio. Founded in 2010 by Mr. Igura, Inokura Leather specializes in handmade leather key fob covers and other leather accessories that can be customized to be truly yours.
Meet the Boss of Inokura Leather
“Shacho”, as is title is, or Mr. Igura has a friendly and strong personality. He loves motorcycles and even has one in the basement of his shop. Motorcycle bags and biker wear was his introduction to his love of leather, the quality and durability behind it. Shacho is self-taught when it comes to leather. He learned by disassembling and reassembling leather goods that he was interested in. From humble beginnings on his own, Mr. Igura now has a team of dedicated craftsmen working under him to produce exceptional quality handmade leather goods. Inokura Leather’s color is full of meaningful symbolism that would be expected from a passionate person such as Mr. Igura. He designed the logo of the company himself. The leaf symbolizes “Kashiwa bark” which was used for its high tannin content to tan leathers. Mr. Igura uses it to symbolize the link between Inokura, tradition, and quality.
Inside The Studio of Inokura Leather
The studio, while small, makes good use of the space. The feeling inside is cozy and the entrance area is packed with ready-to-sell crafts made in the studio. The studio makes a surplus of the base of its most popular key fob covers in all 14 colors that they offer and have them ready for customization as well. A large print of the company’s logo hangs on the wall with plenty of cut and unstitched key fob cover. Up just a couple steps from the showroom is the studio. Here the craftsmen all work at desks with varying equipment at each. Some utilize tools to cut and stitch the leather. Others are armed with computers working in Photoshop to finalize custom designs to print on the leather. One workstation has the printer that makes the crafts produced in the workshop truly unique. At any given time during the day there are about a dozen craftsmen working on the made-to-order leather goods.
